Assignment 1: Marine Science Career Exploration

Materials:
  • Oceanography textbook, computer with Internet access
Directions:
  1. Log into wikispaces.com, go the student wikis, click on your name, and click "Edit."
  2. Now insert a table onto your page like the one below
  3. Conduct some research on marine science and related careers and complete the table below, using my example as a guide.
  4. You must summarize the job description for at least 5 careers (1 of which can be something completely unrelated to marine science). For example, if you want to be an architect, you can summarize a job description for that.
  5. Finally, you may choose to work solo or with 1 partner, and you will have 2 class periods for this assignment. However, if you work with a partner, make sure you indicate that along with your work.

Environmental Educator
Minimum of a B.S. (Bachelor's of Science)
  • Must have a major in either life, earth, or physical science
  • Must have training and certification in education
  • Instruct students (levels vary from elementary - post secondary)
  • Lead educational programs and projects for adults and youth.
  • Train and coordinate with volunteers called Master Environmental Educators who go into the schools to give presentations on forestry, wildlife and local environmental issues.
  • Coordinate programs on topics like invasive exotic plants and prescribed burning for landowners, coastal landscaping seminars for nurseries and homeowners, teacher environmental workshops, training for 4-H camp staff, manatee dive trips, kayak trips, river cleanups, beach cleanups and underwater cleanups.
$40,000 - $60,000
There is a demand for well qualified environmental educators in schools and universities. However, local, state, and federal park educators may be limited to seasonal work and a reduced salary.
